The Role of the Church

Power, Fear, and Community

Political Power

The Church was wealthy. It owned 25% of the land in England. The Pope (in Rome) had authority over Kings, able to excommunicate them (kick them out of the Church).

Social Control

Doom Paintings in churches showed terrifying images of Hell to ensure people followed Church rules. People paid a Tithe (10% tax) to the church.

Community Hub

Monasteries and convents provided the only healthcare (infirmaries) and education available. Monks copied books by hand to preserve knowledge.

The Feudal System

Hierarchy and Land Ownership

Society was structured like a pyramid based on land (fiefs) and loyalty. Hover over the bars below to visualize the population size vs. power.

THE KING (Monarch)

KNIGHTS
PEASANTS (Villeins & Freemen)

Homage

The ceremony where a vassal promised loyalty to his Lord in exchange for land.

The Deal

Peasants worked the land for free (labor service) in exchange for protection from the Lord's knights.
